2.3 Specimen Preparation
For the experimental plan,the Taguchi method of two-level experiments was chosen with careful understanding to select levels for each factor.
Further varied amount of Silicon (2–5 wt%) and Molybdenum (2–5 wt%) as alloying elementin powder form was added via hardfacing technique as submerged arc surfacing.
In this experiment,an iron base hardfacing layer was deposited by the SAW process on100 9 120 9 9 mmmild steel plates.
Experiment consisted of depositing materials of length 100 mm in one pass on a plate.
The input and fixed parameters used in the present investigation are given below in
Table 2,3 and 4; Fig.1
4 Edax Analysis
In a SAW deposit,dilution in the first layer,deposited on thebase metal,is the highest.Hence,
substantial alteration inmicrostructure across the crosssection of the deposit is expected.
Hardface deposits having different compositions and differentlevels of dilutionwere characterised using EDAX(JEOL 1561).
TheEDAXanalysis for deposit and basemetalwas carried out.
